Budget Reply 2020 and the Global Goals

Last week, we looked into how the Coalition has committed to achieving aspects of the Global Goals through the 2020 / 2021 Budget. This week, we are looking at Labor's Budget Reply speech made last Thursday night by Anthony Albanese, the Opposition Leader.

The budget reply allows the opposition to explain what they believe to be wrong with the budget and speak to points for their own plan towards a better future.

These points include the following promises - what we would have seen for Budget 2020 / 2021 if the opposition was in power and what we may see if a Labor Government is elected at the next federal election:

Goal 3: Good Health and Well-Being

- Establishment of the Australian Centre for Disease Control

Goal 4: Quality Education

- Remove the annual cap on the childcare subsidy

- An investigation into increasing the maximum childcare subsidy to 90%

- ACCC to design price regulation mechanism around childcare

- Australian Skills Guarantee

Goal 7: Affordable and Clean Energy

- Establishment of the Rewiring the Nation Corporation

Goal 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

- Creation of National Rail Manufacturing Plan

Labor also raised concerns over social housing, aged care facilities, tertiary education, the response to the bushfires and job security. The commitment to net zero emissions by 2050 was also reemphasised.

There wasn't a lot to go off in the Budget Reply in terms of understanding future commitments.

The budget passed through both houses by last Friday with Labor support in the Senate, which means that Australians will see the benefits of the budget sooner.
